Tips for the care of fishing line

Regina Jacobsen, May 5, 2018

In fishing, one of the most important elements and that we care less is the thread. The line, gut, thread or hair (as we want to call it) does not usually have all the care it requires. We usually fill the spools of yarn and forget about it indefinitely.

If you break the fishing line in the middle of the day is not bad luck, but poor preparation or poor condition of the material

However, if we think about it, it is the most important piece of our equipment: you can fish with a rod or a spool in poor condition, but as the thread is not in condition, fishing will never occur. So we should pay more attention.

Requirements for fishing line care are very simple:

Beware of the sun

Do not leave the reeds and reels in the sun because it could burn our equipment.

Wash with fresh water

Sweeten the entire material well after the fishing day. Fundamentally, it is a question of washing the spool and the thread with fresh water, but without subjecting it to pressure, since water under pressure tends to spoil the reels. The fresh water must be very abundant to dissolve the salt inside the reel.

Renew thread every season

Change the thread of the spool every season. This way we will ensure the optimal state for our battles. This is something that is usually only done in the deep sea fishing because if the material is not in perfect conditions you cannot fish.

I know it can be a bit expensive, but often it is less than we think, because we find quality thread spools in the market at very affordable prices. For example, 500 meters of nylon 30 pounds for just 15 euros, I do not think it is prohibitive for the profitability of the matter, if we think that an artificial brand costs us that or more.

Mount the thread by rewinding the reverse

Put the end of the reel at the beginning: once a year we can remove the thread and rewind the reel backwards. So we will fish the second season with new yarn, since we regularly never take more than 20% of our yarn off the reel and in this way it is almost as if we were starting the yarn.

Minimum standards

Carry out the thread selection carefully. It should be approved by IGFA, the international sport fishing association, which guarantees minimum quality standards.

We must take into account that the explicit resistance on the labels of the coils and know that sometimes the threads break at 60% or 70% of maximum load announced. On the other hand, the reels are regulated to a maximum brake of a resistance of 1/3 of what they mark as maximum load, so the recommended for a line of 30 pounds would be that the reel at 5 kilos of pressure will release line without problems, thus we guarantee the null breakage due to excess brake, something very common among beginners. How many times have we heard that a fish in battle broke the line? That’s not bad luck, that’s always bad preparation or bad condition of the material.
