How Do You Choose a Quality Jewel Case?

Regina Jacobsen, October 5, 2022October 5, 2022

Standard CD jewel boxes and trays are typically made of polystyrene, an inexpensive and very rigid plastic. In terms of clarity, there are few plastics which match polystyrene and none that are inexpensive enough for disc packaging. This clarity has made polystyrene a favorite among post production professionals, but also causes the case’s frailty – particularly around the hinges, which can break if the case is dropped. A high quality jewel case is more resistant to breaking.

To choose a good quality polystyrene jewel case, you’ll want to look at the amount of plastic used in the case and the amount of virgin material that is used. Quality cases contain more virgin plastic than poor quality cases.

So, your first clue to jewel case quality will be the weight. Heavier equals higher quality.

Your second clue will be clarity. The more recycled plastic you add to a jewel case, the cloudier it becomes. Manufacturers often add color to the case to cover up the cloudiness.

Finally, check the product description to see if the jewel case is listed as “automatable” or “machinable.” Better quality cases are able to stand up to the rigors of an automated assembly line.

Of course, in matters of cost or conscience, everything is a tradeoff. For example, Polyline carries a green-tinted jewel case that contains 37% post-consumer recycled content. Combining recycled and virgin materials helps with strength issue as does the high plastic content.

Those who are trying to save money will try to go with a slimmer CD Jewel case which costs less because it contains less plastic and is also less expensive to ship.

My recommendation is that you always get a sample before trying out a new packaging option. Quality merchants, like Polyline, are able to provide samples to help customers choose the right product.
